Walker's Way follows

Joe Walker's journey from slavery to self-determination and freedom.

The Civil War provides Joe the opportunity to escape from his masters. Hungry for justice, but lacking allies or resources, he joins the Union Army and literally fights his way to freedom. After the war, he goes in search of his family and, after some trials, reunites with his older brother, Amos. Together, they migrate west in search of the spoils of freedom, but Walker's violent past follows him like a dragging chain.

“…he provides enough action and conflict to keep the pages turning. And Joe is a lot more than a fast gun. The author imbues this soulful loner with depth, sensitivity, and spirituality.  Some of this addictive novel’s most poignant moments involve Joe’s special connection to his various horses … An engaging tale that depicts the atrocities of slavery and the redemptive power of love.”

What Readers Are Saying

“This novel is an enjoyable, page turning read. The full character of life as a black man in the American South and West is given careful consideration which provides a sound foundation for some good story telling.”

“I loved every page of the book especially Joe’s relationship with the Native Americans … Joe epitomizes the dream of being one’s own man and living for a purpose…I selfishly don’t want this to be the end of his journey.  One of my favorite books!”

“This is a book to be read over several days. It could be read more quickly, being the page-turner it is, but why do that? Savor the process, learn from the history it describes … It will stay with the reader long after the last page is read.”

Walker’s Way

My name is Joe Walker
and it is my way

To seek out the wicked
and see that they pay

Born into bondage,
a life without ease

My spirit forbade me
to live on my knees

My faith allows me
to resist the dark side

Despite my profession,
with Jesus I bide

My life has spanned conflict,
heartache and pain

Yet I have found sunshine
to balance the rain

My name is Joe Walker
and it is my way

To ride through the darkness
to get to the day.
